Professional Development

I am available to support your professional development needs, either through one of our SickKids’ workshops described below, or tailored to your needs.

Workshop offerings are listed below.

Planning for Implementation Practice (PIP)

Implementing evidence-based innovations is a complex process. There are dozens of implementation theories, models, and frameworks in the literature, but knowing which one to use and when is often a barrier to implementation in real-world and research settings. The Planning for Implementation Practice (PIP™) workshop provides an introduction to implementation science applied in practice. PIP™ covers the core elements of implementation science with a focus on learning and planning. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of implementation science and learn how to use an evidence-informed implementation planning framework called The Implementation Roadmap(C).

 Who should take PIP?

The workshop is intended for implementers, researchers, practitioners, community partners and policy/decision-makers. PIP™ is appropriate for those working in any field or sector who are a) new to implementation science and practice, and b) seeking to implement a practice, intervention or innovation in their setting or their research.

Course Content

Participants will leave with an understanding of the core elements of implementation science and how these can be integrated and applied in real-world implementation settings. Participants will also receive a copy of The Implementation Roadmap (includes a workbook, four roadmap posters, and fillable PDF).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Define implementation and related terms

• Describe the five core components of implementation planning.

• Apply an implementation planning framework to their own initiative.

Registration Details: Next workshop will be held on May 23-24, 2023. The registration portal is not yet open.

Time Commitment

Virtual format: Two days (10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Course Fee: TBD

Specialist Knowledge Translation Training (SKTT)

A well-developed knowledge translation (KT) plan is often a proposal requirement for health research in Canada and abroad, and there is greater attention to research utilization and research impact. The SKTT™ training course was developed on the premise that scientists are agents of change in creating research impact, promoting research utilization, and ensuring their research findings reach the appropriate audiences. There is a skillset surrounding KT practice, and it is these competencies that the training course was designed to impart.

SKTT is a workshop intended for those interested in sharing research knowledge with audiences beyond the academic community. The workshop was designed to teach the unique skillset associated with KT practice. This includes understanding how to increase the impact potential of research, building practical KT planning skills, as well as skills required to communicate with a variety of audiences.

Since 2004, SKTT has trained 3,532 participants, worldwide.

Audience

The workshop is appropriate for scientists (basic, clinical, health services, population health) as well as educators, clinicians and KT professionals (e.g., KT Specialists, KT Managers, Knowledge Brokers). While the focus is on health, the material is highly relevant to individuals working in other sectors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define KT and related terms
  • Describe the relevance of KT in their context and role
  • Identify strategies for sharing evidence and engaging multiple knowledge user audiences
  • Use KT planning tools and resources to develop a KT plan (e.g., KT Planning Template©, KT Game©)

Workshop Options

SKTT is offered (1) privately by Melanie Barwick Consulting, upon request and with costing estimated for the whole group (see Client List), and (2) through the Hospital for Sick Children Learning Institute in Spring and Fall. Individuals wishing to take the course at SickKids can register via Cvent for SKTT courses offered by the Learning Institute, twice per year: Spring and Fall http://www.sickkids.ca/Learning/AbouttheInstitute/Programs/Knowledge-Translation/index.html

The KTPC™ course is aimed at developing the competencies of KT practitioners working across all disciplines such as health, education, prevention/promotion, agriculture, and others. However you identify yourself professionally, this course is for you if you serve an intermediary role between science and practice. We invite the active participation of your employer to help build an organizational culture for KT.

Over 500 Knowledge Translation practitioners and specialists have graduated from the Knowledge Translation Professional Certificate™ to date.

KTPC™ Learning Objectives

KTPC™ supports participants to achieve the following:
